Title: Beyond Data Transport Toward Intelligent and Energy-Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks

Speaker: Prof. Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) are reaching a turning point: transmitting every measurement to centralized processors is costly, while emerging applications demand real-time, energy-efficient intelligence. This keynote explores over- the-air computation (AirComp), where wireless signal superposition becomes a computational resource rather than interference to be eliminated. We examine how distributed IoT devices can jointly compute functions while adapting transmission power and receiver normalization without centralized control or global channel knowledge. Starting with a single fusion center, we introduce game-theoretic mechanisms that combine local channel observations with lightweight aggregate feedback to balance computation accuracy, energy consumption, and stability. We then extend these principles to multi-receiver networks, where local signal alignment must coexist with cross-cell interference. Hierarchical games and distributed best-response updates enable interference-aware coordination with scalable signaling and computational complexity. Recognizing that IoT systems operate with imperfect channel information
and noisy feedback, we further investigate learning-based power control, using no-regret dynamics to approach approximate coarse correlated equilibria. Numerical studies demonstrate efficient convergence, competitive aggregation accuracy, reduced energy requirements, and robustness to network changes. We also highlight UAV-assisted computation, where node placement directly influences aggregation fidelity. Together, these advances point toward wireless networks that compute, coordinate, and learn natively.
